about

Non-grid-based, minimalist electronic music, constructed from vocal & percussion improvisations from April 2021 and July 2022. An exercise in stretching time between two pivot points, and the creation of momentum through disruptions in pulse.

This project began during lockdown in Panjer, Denpasar in early 2021. Seeking a hybrid of several genres that went beyond pastiche, and approached music as abstraction, while still reflecting the feeling of time and place. Aside from the second release in the series, this is hand-drawn MIDI, based on vocal and percussion improvisations, run through free FX, software synths, and samples from friends.

My listening list at the time was gamelan, harsh noise, deconstructed club, and several sub-genres of extreme metal. Mostly constructed in the house when things were still closed, I was looking to express the chaos (both real and imagined) of the world outside, while also expressing a kind of raw energy and hope—that the future could be harsh/unpredictable, yet bright/colorful at once.

Each release in this series works toward a hybrid composition language based on metal/gamelan/noise/electronics, with a special focus on micro-timing and the subtleties of human performance. The language is then fed back into each influencing genre and context to see how it fits, how it strains, and how it opens up new possibilities for sound and expression.
